Sleep, stress, and your heart

We talk a lot about what you eat. But how you rest matters to your heart too — and in Brooklyn, where the rent's high, the trains are late, and somebody always needs something, rest is the first thing that gets cut.

Here's the honest version: chronic stress and short sleep both raise your blood pressure and make your heart work harder, day after day. You can't always change what's stressing you. But you can give your heart a few breaks.

On sleep:

  • Aim for a steady bedtime. Going to bed and waking around the same time matters more than the exact hours. Your heart likes a rhythm.
  • Watch the loud snoring. If you snore hard and wake up tired no matter how long you slept, ask your doctor about sleep apnea — it's common and it's hard on the heart, and it's treatable.
  • Wind the screen down. The phone keeps your brain switched on. Give yourself 30 minutes before bed without it.

On stress:

  • Move it out. A walk around the block does more for stress than scrolling. Ten minutes counts.
  • Breathe slow, on purpose. Four counts in, six counts out, for a minute. It's free, it works, and nobody has to know you're doing it.
  • Protect one thing that's yours. Church, the garden, dominoes, a phone call with somebody who makes you laugh. The thing that refills you isn't optional — it's maintenance.
  • Don't carry it silent. Talking to someone — a friend, a pastor, a counselor — takes weight off your heart in a real, physical way.

You don't have to fix your whole life. Pick one — sleep or stress — and give it a little room this week.
